The color coordination of the routes turns out to have a major affect on gameplay, as it can be a lot harder to get multiple routes in the same area, as they sometimes require the same color of card.Ībout the Terrain Cards: The terrain cards are a new deck of cards containing just three sorts of cards: jungle (purple, green, blue), desert (orange, red, yellow), and mountain (white, black, gray). Finally black, white and gray routes appear toward the coasts and separating the main jungle from the northern desert these represent mountains. Orange, red, and yellow routes appear to the south and north - representing deserts. The middle of the map is all purple, green, and blue - for the jungles. The routes are also arranged by color on this map, which hasn't been done anywhere else. We played a four-player game, which is usually one of the numbers that allows for a looser map, and it was still very tight with lots of conflict for some of the routes. It also has a new map (of course) and brand-new terrain cards.Ībout the Map: The African map felt a lot tighter than most of the Ticket to Ride maps, especially through the center of the continent where all the routes were single routes (not doubles). Heart of Africa plays much like previous Ticket to Ride games, including the ferries that have appeared in some previous expansions. However, this issue probably impacted my Substance rating more than my Style.Īs with Days of Wonders products, the components in this one are an absolute delight, and thus I've given it a full "5" out of "5" for Style. They were great deals as a result, though this one is still good. I was somewhat disappointed to only see one map in this box, whereas the two previous map collections had two. Beyond that, you're mostly building connections though. Theme: The Ticket to Ride games aren't very theme heavy, though this one does a nice job of arranging different route colors to form deserts and jungles in Africa. I did have a little bit of a problem with the white routes not showing up well on the destination tickets, which made it easy to misjudge the difficulty of getting to some locations (but that's solely a planning issue everything is very clear on the board). Usability: As with all the Ticket to Ride games, it's easy to pick out routes in this one thanks to destination tickets that show precisely what you have to build in a graphic way. However, Days of Wonder makes up for this with superb graphic design that makes everything look very attractive. 5 out of 5.īeauty: The maps for Ticket to Ride are, out of necessity, somewhat plain due to the need for colored routes to crisscross the board. Everything is linen-textured and very sturdy. Quality: Days of Wonder always produces great quality components, and this game is no exception. In addition, you get a deck of special terrain cards. The box thus contains the game board and the destination tickets for it. Unlike the other two map collections, this one only comes with one new map to play.
